Email marketing is an excellent tactic to reach customers and potential customers and keep them informed about your business, your products and services, what’s happening in your industry, and what’s happening on your website. But if you send out boring, lifeless emails your subscribers will start unsubscribing or deleting your emails without even opening them up.
Here are 5 tips for creating an awesome email campaign:
Use Enticing Subject Lines
Most of your email subscribers receive dozens of emails every day and can’t and won’t open everything they receive. Your email needs to stand out in a crowded inbox and the way to do that is with an enticing subject line.
There are lots of ways to make your subject line enticing. Here are a few ideas:
- Use numbers (i.e. 6 Workout Routines that Burn Fat Fast)
- Use negative headlines (i.e. Warning: Don’t make these fashion mistakes this spring!)
- Announce a contest (i.e. Enter now to win a $50 gift card)
- Announce company news (i.e. New location coming soon to Indianapolis!)
These headlines should grab your subscribers attention but they shouldn’t give too much away because you want them to open and read the email for all the details.
Make it Mobile-Friendly
More and more people are checking their email on their phones. Your email campaigns should be designed with mobile in mind. If your email is difficult to load and read on a phone, your subscribers will stop opening them, or worse—they’ll unsubscribe or label your email as “junk.” We use MailChimp to send out our email campaigns. Get Straight to the Point (and make the point a good one!)
Your subscribers live busy lives and will only have a few minutes to dedicate to reading your email. Respect your subscribers’ time. Avoid wordy descriptions of new blog posts and don’t include a dozen photos when 1 or 2 would be adequate. Be choosy about what you are sending out—that means your most interesting, relevant, and newsworthy content.
Make it Easy to Forward
If your email includes interesting and exciting content, your subscribers are going to want to share it with others. Make it easy for them by including a “forward to a friend” link.
Make it Easy to Contact Your Business
If you’re advertising a service or product, make it easy for your readers to schedule that service or buy that product. For example, if you’re a landscaping company advertising a spring lawn care special, include a phone number in the email so customers can call and schedule right away. Don’t make them search your website for that information, they might not have time and forget to do so later.
It’s also important to include links to your social media profiles. Don’t assume that because someone subscribes to your email list that they are also a Facebook fan or Twitter follower. Some readers may be more likely to send you a tweet or Facebook message than call you on the phone. Give them the option!
